Florida’s bird lovers have been talking very much on a new food supplement for their cute little feathered pals. Spirulina has been proved to have some amazing effects on birds. It is a dried aquatic vegetable, and eatable blue-green microalgae, which includes 72% protein and .5% beta carotene. It is one of the richest sources of natural vitamin B-12 in the world. A feather of the bird becomes glossy and intense colors are seen on feathers because of Spirulina. It also enhances the health of the bird and fertility of the bird also goes up.
Spirulina works very well in increasing the fertility in birds, in fact birds were able to increase the production of finches, hookbills and canaries to double. Spirulina was patented for this one time. After the expiry of that patent, now Spirulina is available for different purposes along with colorful birds and poultry. It has been showed that even small amounts of Spirulina caused the fertility of quail to increase up to 96.1% by the Professor Ross of the Hawaiian University and Warren Dominy of Oceanic Institute. This rate is very compared to the quail on a standard regular breeder diet. Studies are still going on at the universities of agriculture to know if it will be practical to use it in commercial poultry operations. Breeders of mysterious birds are finding it very effective. Some scientific experiments have found that even small portions of Spirulina, after the preparation of a dish greatly improves health, color and fertility in birds. Some studies have also discovered that Spirulina increases metabolic rate and improves digestive problems. It also has powerful anti-cancer and anti-viral properties, it lowers serum cholesterol and it protects against kidney failures.
Since dehydrated Spirulina is very much stable, it can be kept for years, only thing is it has to be kept in a cool, dark and dry place. It comes in the form of dust in a dark green color. It can be mixed with bird food or just feed like as it is.
