Of these two Spirulina is a micro algae that is almost 3.5 billion years old.

In another incident a group of scientists from National School of Biological Sciences discovered that the protective results of Spirulina and few other cyanobacteria against liver and kidney damage caused by stress related to oxidation. According to the experts this stress comes where there is no proper balance between the production of reactive oxygen and ability of the body to eliminate it.

The collection of heavy metals is due to the ingestion of food, the environmental adulteration and straight forward exposure to these components. Investigators also said that when heavy metal contamination happens, kidneys and liver gets damaged by oxidative stress. These organs may be affected by atrophy, cell damage, hyperchromasia and edema.

The research that was held included the administration of Spirulina to an animal through a small tube intragastrically, after 30 minutes of mercury poisoning. During the five days of time Spirulina was given and the animal was killed on the sixth day. And the result was, there was no damage found inside.
